1. I teach a videoconferenced lecture. Will students at distributed sites be able to participate?

Audience Response Systems works in both local and videoconferenced lectures. The technology sends the data from all locations to a central database, and the instructor is able to show the aggregated data to the students almost instantaneously.

2. How do students vote in a poll?

Students in Undergrad Year 1 and 2 vote by logging into the polling session on a website using their personal device (i.e. smartphone, tablet, or other web enabled device). For any other session, on-site AV technicians will be responsible for providing voting devices (clickers). Students will take one as they enter the lecture theatre and will be required to return it before leaving the lecture theatre.

3. Are students anonymous or are their voting devices registered to a student number?

By default, when students receive their voting devices they will be given a random device which will not have been assigned a student number, and will therefore be anonymous. If you would like your students’ responses to be tracked by their student numbers, inform your event organizer six days in advance of your session, so that this special arrangement can be made.

4. Is training available?

MedIT provides faculty with two types of training for audience response systems:

  1. Hands-on training for using TurningPoint: this training can be arranged prior to the session, or as just-in-time training, within 20 minutes of the session.
  2. Consultative training about structuring engagement opportunities by using audience response systems in a lecture, Case Wrap Up or session. MedIT’s Technology Enabled Learning Liaison can meet with you at your office or clinic to explore teaching approaches and the various ways of introducing this system in the lecture theatre.
