Instant Messaging

Instant Messaging (IM) is a form of real-time, text-based communication between two or more people. Jabber, or Pidgin, is the IM service used in the Faculty of Medicine. A contact or “buddy” list allows you to instantly message your colleagues and set your availability status to online, busy, away, etc. An optional message can also accompany this status indicator to inform users of your location, or provide contact information (e.g., @UNBC 250-123-4567). Status indicators set expectations as to when a contact can reply to a message. IM is considered to be less intrusive than a phone call, but more immediate than an email.

IM is available to staff, faculty and researchers affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine.
