Malcolm Petch receives Staff Award of Excellence

Congratulations to Malcolm Petch, recipient of the UBC Okanagan Staff Award of Excellence for Enhancing the UBC Experience (Customer Service).

The award for Enhancing the UBC Experience (Customer Service) is one of four Staff Awards given annually to an individual or team who has contributed to the University. The award focuses on those who have demonstrated exemplary customer service skills, beyond the normal requirements of their job.

Malcolm Petch, Audiovisual Analyst

Petch is an Audiovisual Analyst who supports the Faculty of Medicine’s Southern Medical Program and provides audiovisual support and advice for many UBC Okanagan meetings and high-profile media and public events.

One such event was the UBC Okanagan Deputy Vice-Chancellor & Principal’s Town Hall on August 28, where award recipients were honoured. Completely unaware of his nomination, Petch was already at the front of the room providing audio support when it was announced that he had won the award. He recalls being shocked, but happily so.

Nominator Cara Kirkey, Project Assistant in the Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Principal, says that thanks to Petch, videoconferencing has become the easiest part of her job. From the initial request, to event setup, and support throughout, Petch’s customer service skills leave his clients assured that the audiovisual needs are well taken care of, allowing them to focus on the other demands of their event.

With glowing nomination letters, two traits earned the most praise from his clients: his proactive problem solving skills, and his calm, confident and professional manner. As Kirkey says, “Technology can stress people out, especially if it isn’t working properly. Malcolm not only solves the problem, but approaches it in a calm, confident manner that eases the technology stress.”

Petch in turn wants to credit the rest of his team in IT, Media and Classroom Services, who he says always provide excellent customer service.
