1. What software will be installed on my computer?

If you are a MedIT customer, the software which is appropriate for your job (and computer) will be installed by MedIT. The software licensed under this agreement is as follows:

  • Windows Desktop Operating System (Windows 7 Enterprise 32bit or 64bit);
  • Office Professional (Microsoft Office 2010 Professional Plus or Office 2011 for Mac);
  • Sophos Anti-Virus.

2. What is a CAL (Client Access License)?

A CAL is not a software product; rather, it is a license that gives a user the right to access the services of the server.

For more information about CALs, please visit Microsoft’s article on CALs.

3. What if my systems are not being managed by MedIT?

If you are in the Dean’s Office and your systems are not managed by MedIT, then you should not purchase the products separately. You can obtain them by having your IT support personnel contact the MedIT Service Desk.

4. Which computers can be licensed under this new agreement?

Computers owned or leased by the University that are purchased for use by the Faculty of Medicine Dean’s Office.

5. How many of the computers are licensed?

All of them as defined by the ownership indicated above.

6. Are you sure my computer was counted when you licensed the software?

No, your computer was not counted. The software was licensed based on the number of Full Time Equivalent (FTE) employees within the Dean’s Office. Once the FTEs are licensed, all University owned computers used by those FTEs are automatically licensed; as a result, we do not need to count them but we do need to be certain that they belong to UBC.

7. How do you know which computers are owned by the University?

Computers that are purchased under Project Grants (PGs) are owned by UBC. This includes budget funded, grant funded and fee for service funded systems.

8. How do I get this software installed on my computer?

Contact the MedIT Service Desk to request an install; a technician will schedule an appropriate time to come by to assist you.

9. Can I have Office 2013 or Windows 8 and later installed?

At this time MedIT has not completed testing on deployment and use of either Office 2013 or Windows 8; as such, we are not ready yet to deploy them. If a decision is made to deploy these products it will be after product testing and evaluation is complete; at that time, a communication and scheduling plan will be implemented to prepare for the transition.

10. What about Visio 2010 or Project 2010? Can I have the latest version of those?
